Mestinon (Pyridostigmine)
Application
Pyridostigmine is used to treat myasthenia gravis. It can also be prescribed to treat other diseases, under the doctor’s agreement.
Application method
Use pyridostigmine according to the doctor’s instructions.
- Pridostigmine may be taken during meals or after it.
- Take it while eating, if it irritates your stomach.
Mechanism of action
Pyridostigmine is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by improving nerve impulses in muscles, so that muscles have greater capacity for work.
Missed dose
If you miss Mestinon dose, and you still have a headache, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take dose of Mestinon within 30 minutes after the last dose. Do not take a double dose at once.
Keeping
Pyridostigmine is kept at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit (20 and 25 degrees C). Keep it away from heat, moisture and light. Keep Pyridostigmine in a place inaccessible for children and away from pets.
Precautionary measures
Do not use pyridostigmine in case:
- you are allergic to any Mestinon ingredient;
- you are taking quinine and quinidine;
- you have stomach, intestines or ureteral obstruction
Contact your doctor immediately if any of these items apply to you.
It is important to know:
- Before having any medical or dental treatment, being provided with emergency medical aid or being operated, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Pyridostigmine.
- Be extremely cautious when letting children use Pyridostigmine. Safety and efficiency have not been confirmed in this case.
- If you become pregnant while taking pyridostigmine, consult your doctor about the benefits and risks of taking Mestinon during pregnancy. Pyridostigmine is excreted with breast milk. If you plan breast-feeding while using Mestinon, consult your doctor concerning the risks for your baby.
Side effects
Consult your doctor if any of these most extensive side effects remain or become frequent:
- Severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, heavy breathing, mouth, face, lips or tongue swelling); blue fingers or toes, chest pain, cold or pale fingers, diarrhea, dizziness, hallucinations, headache, irregular heartbeat, leg cramps or weakness, mood changes, muscle pain, numbness or hands feet or skin tingling, ears ringing, severe or persistent nausea or vomiting, dyspnea, swelling, temporary fast or slow heartbeat, vomiting, weak pulse.
